Most adults have fond memories of playing outside when they were kids. Unfortunately, getting today’s kids excited about the same activities can be tricky. Video games and online content can easily capture your kids’ attention instead of the great outdoors. Check out five ways to get your kids playing outside this summer.
Give Them Outdoor Toys
I’m sure there are plenty of adults who remember playing outside with nothing but nature’s toys: sticks, pebbles, wildflowers, and more. You have a much better chance of getting your kids excited about playing outdoors if they have things to do and toys to play with. Invest in some outdoor sports equipment, a swing set, or even just allow your kids to take their favorite toys outside.
Build Forts and Tents
Every child can benefit from playing pretend and using their imagination. Some kiddos might need your help getting started. Why not spend a weekend morning building tents or forts out of materials you have lying around at home? A few cardboard boxes taped together can easily become a house to play in outside. With a sheet and some sticks, you can even make a tent.
Go on an Outdoor Excursion
Your kids will be more likely to get excited about nature if you show them how it’s done. Take the whole family on a nature hike, or introduce your kiddos to fishing. Part of the fun of an outdoor excursion is learning to feel comfortable outdoors. Your kids will learn to enjoy playing outside independently once they’ve tried it with you.
Fly Kites
Flying a kite is a magical experience for many kids and even some adults! All you need is a kite and a windy day, plus maybe a little patience. It does take a few tries to get a kite flying properly, but the payoff makes the effort well worth it.
Pull Out the Chalk
Not everyone has a big backyard for their kids to play in. If that’s you, don’t worry. Try giving your kids some chalk and showing them how to make games like foursquare and hopscotch. Artistic kids will love covering the driveway in pictures from their imagination.
We hope you enjoyed these five ways to get your kids to play outside this summer. While you may have to help your kids get started, they will eventually learn to have fun outdoors on their own.
