Whether you’re a homeschooling mom like me or not, it’s fun to do learning activities at home with your kids! Easy science experiments are always a hit because they’re hands-on and exciting.
This sink or float science experiment is quick and easy, and can be done by kids of any age. They will have a blast learning about density!
How do you do this floating grape science experiment?
Supplies:
- two clear cups
- two grapes
- salt
- water
- spoon
Step 1: Fill a cup with water. Ask your kids to hypothesize if the grape will float or sink, then have them drop it in the water. The grape will sink.
Step 2: Fill a second cup with water. Have your kids pour a generous amount of salt in, and use a spoon to stir it until the salt dissolves. Repeat this step until the salt no longer dissolves in the water.
Step 3: Ask your kids to hypothesize if the grape will sink or float in the salt water. Then, ask them to drop the grape in it. The grape will float. (If it doesn’t float, it means there is not enough salt in the water. Simply add more salt and stir it in until the grape floats).
How does it work?
The grape sinks in fresh water because it is more dense (heavy) than the water. Adding salt to the water makes it more dense than the grape, which is why the grape floats in salt water.
Fun fact: The water in the Dead Sea is so salty and dense that people automatically float in it!
