Kids love learning, especially when it’s hands on and fun! This rain cloud in a jar experiment is a great way to explore the weather, water cycle and clouds. It’s a quick and easy science experiment that can easily be done with kids of any age. I did this with two 4-year-olds and a 2-year-old and they all had so much fun!
How do clouds make rain?
Clouds are formed when the water vapor in the air turns into liquid water droplets. When the water droplets become too heavy, they fall down as rain.
The rain cloud in a jar experiment simulates this. Your kids will drop water onto the cloud until it can no longer hold it…and then it will “rain” into the jar!

How do you make a rain cloud in a jar?
Supplies:
- glass jar
- shaving cream (Make sure it’s cream and not gel. I some from the dollar store.)
- water
- blue food coloring
- eye dropper
Step 1: Fill a glass jar with water almost to the top. In a separate container, mix a little bit of water with blue food coloring.
Step 2: Fill the rest of the jar with shaving cream to create the cloud.
Step 3: Using the eye dropper, drop the blue water over the shaving cream. Continue to do it until it seeps through, creating “rain” in the jar.
