Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 45 minutes
Servings: 1 cup

Ingredients

  • half butternut squash (about 2.5 cups, cubed)
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme
  • 1/4 cup water or more as needed (can be substituted with breast milk or baby formula)

Equipment

  • Baby Bullet
  • blender
  • Food Processor

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Wash, peel, and remove the seeds from the butternut squash. Cut into approximately 1/2-inch cubes.
Place 2 1/2 cups of cubed squash on a baking sheet with the fresh thyme. Drizzle with olive oil and toss until evenly coated.
  3. Roast for 25–30 minutes, stirring halfway through, until the edges are lightly golden and the squash is very soft and easily mashed with a fork.
  4. Allow the squash to cool slightly, then transfer it to a blender or food processor.
Add 1/4 cup of water and blend until smooth, adding more liquid a little at a time if needed. Prepared infant formula or breast milk can be used instead of water once the squash has cooled.
  5. Allow the puree to reach a safe serving temperature and check that the texture is appropriate for your baby's developmental stage.

Notes

  • Recipe Tips:
    • Roasting brings out the butternut squash's natural sweetness.
    • Fresh thyme adds a mild, earthy flavor without needing added salt or sugar.
    • For a smoother puree, use a high-powered blender.
    • For babies ready for thicker textures, mash the roasted squash with a potato masher instead of blending.
    • Add liquid gradually to reach your desired consistency.
    • Refrigerate homemade baby food promptly in an airtight container for 1–2 days, or freeze individual portions for 1–2 months for best quality.
    • Discard any leftovers from your baby's serving bowl.
Feeding Note: This recipe is intended for babies who are developmentally ready for solid foods, typically around 6 months old. Serve in an age-appropriate texture and consult your pediatrician if you have feeding or allergy concerns.
