Many children prefer to consume sugary drinks because they are popular, enticing, and delicious. Water is the healthiest way to hydrate our kids, but it can be difficult to get them to drink it if they’re used to juice and soda. Thankfully, there are other healthy drink options that your kids can have that aren’t loaded with sugar.
Coconut Water
Many people say that coconut water is a natural Gatorade. That’s because this drink contains digestible carbs, potassium, amino acids, and antioxidants that greatly benefit your health. If your children are active in sports, consider handing them coconut water after a workout, as it will replenish their electrolytes and boost hydration.
Honey Cinnamon Milk
Sometimes your children want a warm, soothing drink, which means they will usually crave a sugary hot chocolate, especially during the cold winter months. If you want to opt for a healthier drink, you might consider having your kids drink honey cinnamon milk. Cinnamon is a fantastic antioxidant with powerful anti-inflammatory properties, and honey is a natural sweetener that is easier for your body to digest. All you need to do is simmer milk with a cinnamon stick and add honey to taste.
Infused Water
If you’re struggling to get your kids to drink more water, try infusing it with their favorite fruit! Some great options are berries, watermelon, oranges, cucumbers, and mango. It’s so delicious and hydrating, your kids will love it!
Smoothies
Smoothies are delicious and a great way to stealthily include more vegetables in your children’s diet. Moreover, smoothies can be a good source of fiber, which is crucial for excellent gut health. Next time you make a smoothie for your kids, try to include beets, spinach, or kale. If you notice the vegetable flavor is too strong, a ripe banana will usually overpower that flavor completely. This chocolate peanut butter smoothie is my kids’ favorite…even though it’s packed with spinach!
Any of these drinks are great alternatives to sugary juices and sodas. Give them a try and see which ones your kids like best!
