If you’re one of those parents who tells their kids not to play with their food, I’m with you. But can we please make an exception this time? Because let me tell you, bread painting is so much fun!
Your kids can paint their bread with bright, vibrant colors, then eat their artwork when they’re done! How fun is that?!
I did this activity with my kids for St. Patrick’s Day, but it can be done any time of the year!
Bread painting is good for:
- toddlers and older
- creativity and imagination
- building fine motor skills
- learning colors

Tips for bread painting:
Bread painting is really fun to make and eat! Here are some tips to make sure it’s a success:
- You can use any type of white bread, as long as there aren’t a lot of holes in them. Ciabatta bread would not work.
- Use small paint brushes to apply the paint to the bread. This will limit the amount of liquid your child uses. Because, lets face it, nobody wants to eat soggy bread!
- Give your child lots of color options. I like to use silicone baking cups to hold the paint.
- Toasting the bread is a must to make the bread edible. I like to use a “light” setting, so it doesn’t hide the design. If necessary, I toast it on light a few times to make sure all the moisture is out of the bread and it is nice and crispy.
- To make it a delicious, sweet treat, I top the toast with butter and a little sugar!
Time to do rainbow bread painting!
Supplies:
- white bread
- milk (dairy or non dairy)
- food coloring
- fine tip paintbrushes (that haven’t been used with paint)
Step 1: Mix milk with a few drops of food color. I use about a tablespoon of milk per color, but there’s no magic ratio.
Step 2: Paint designs on the bread using all the colors. Be creative!
Step 3: Toast the bread and serve! I like to toast it on a light setting so the artwork shows through. Toast it a few times, if necessary, to remove the added moisture in the bread. I like to serve the toast with butter and a little sugar for a sweet treat!
