Try it with your kids, and see what kind of birds come to visit!
What is Earth Day
Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22nd. It’s a day to celebrate our beautiful planet and to bring attention to environmental issues that affect it.
Earth Day is the perfect opportunity to teach your kids about caring for the environment and how we can make our home a better place.
Other Ideas to Reduce Food Waste
Approximately 1/3 of all food produced around the world gets wasted. That is such a sad reality, when so many people go hungry every day. Food waste is also a contributing factor in global warming due to all the energy and resources needed to produce the food that just ends up in the dump.
So what can we do about it? Here are a few ideas:
- Avoid buying too much food.
- Store your food properly so it doesn’t spoil too quickly.
- Freeze excess food.
- Use food scraps to create new dishes.
- Compost food scraps at home.
Kids Earth Day Books
Here are some great books about recycling and taking care of our Earth:

How do you make a bird feeder out of fruit scraps?
Supplies:
- half a rind of an orange or grapefruit
- fruit or vegetable scraps* (I used apple cores)
- twine or yarn
Step 1: Cut an orange or grapefruit in half, then remove the flesh to create a “bowl.” There is no need to completely scrape out the bowl, since the birds can eat the citrus.
Step 2: Poke four holes into the citrus bowl (I used a skewer, but you can also use a knife). Then, string two long pieces of twine or yarn through the holes to create an “x” (pictured below).
Step 3: Tie the strings to a tree or any other place you want to hang the bird feeder. Then, fill it with cut pieces of fruit scraps*.
Notes: I used apple cores to fill my bird feeder. I cut all the flesh off the core, being careful to remove any apple seeds. It’s important to remove the seeds from apples and pears, as well as the pits from cherries, apricots, peaches, nectarines, and plums as these are toxic to birds.
