My kids and I have done this grass hair salon a few times, and it’s always been a hit! This project is great for toddlers and young kids, because they have a blast cutting the “hair.” The best part is the grass keeps growing and this can be done again and again.
This grass hair salon is great for:
- learning how plants grow
- fine motor skills/practicing cutting
- creativity
- imagination
The basic needs of living things.
This project is the perfect way to introduce basic needs to your child. Explain to them that all living things need food, water, air, and shelter to live.
Plants, like this grass hair salon, will need soil (food), water, air, and a cup or pot (shelter) and sunlight for it to grow and thrive.
Let’s make this grass hair salon!
You’ll need:
- wheat grass seeds
- soil
- plastic cups
- water
- a skewer (or something to poke holes with)
- markers
- scissors
Step 1: Have your child draw faces on the plastic cups. Encourage them to be creative! Alternatively, you can also print a picture of them and tape it on to the cup.
Step 2: Use a skewer to poke a few holes on the bottom of the cups. This will allow the excess water to drain.
Step 3: Fill the cups about half way with soil, then add a bunch of wheat grass seeds to it. Cover it with more soil, and add water. We like to use a spray bottle.
Step 4: Place the cups in a sunny spot, and water them daily. As your child waters the plants, encourage them to make observations on how it is (or isn’t) changing every day.
Step 5: Once the grass has grown a few inches, it’s time to give them haircuts! Let your child have fun cutting and styling their hair. Then, continue to water them daily and repeat the process!
Supplement this activity with a book!
Harriet’s Haircut is the perfect book to go along with this activity! Read this book before hand, then your kids can do this activity along with Emily and Hannah!
