Have fun with this easy Groundhog Day kids craft! Pop the groundhog’s head above the grass…does he see his shadow?
Groundhog Day is a popular tradition observed in the United States and Canada on February 2nd. According to Pennslyvania Dutch superstition, if the groundhog emerges from his burrow and sees his shadow, winter will be extended for 6 more weeks! If he doesn’t see his shadow, Spring will come early!
The most popular Groundhog Day ceremony is held annually in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where up to 40,000 people attend. This year marked 136th year of this event.
Fun Groundhog Facts
- Groundhogs are also known as woodchucks.
- They are only found in North America (Canada and the United States).
- Groundhogs eat grass, berries, vegetables and insects.
- They hibernate in the winter.
- Groundhogs dig underground tunnels and can move 700 lbs of dirt while digging a burrow!

How do you make this Groundhog Day craft?
Supplies
- free printable template
- white paper or white cardstock
- green construction paper
- colored pencils or markers
- popsicle stick
- paper cup
- scissors
- tape
Step 1: Print the template onto white paper or white cardstock. There are different sizes of groundhogs on the sheet. Choose the one that fits best in your paper cup, then color it and cut it out.
Step 2: Tape the popsicle stick to the back of the groundhog.
Step 3: Cut a slit in the bottom of the cup, big enough for the popsicle stick to fit in.
Step 4: Cut the green construction paper slightly wider than the height of the cup. Then, make small cuts along the top of the strip of paper to make it look like grass.
Step 5: Tape the green paper around the cup.
Step 6: Insert the popsicle stick through the slit in the cup. Then, push the popsicle stick up and down to make the groundhog appear and disappear!
