Christmas White Hot Chocolate

Coquito (Puerto Rican eggnog) is the choice holiday beverage for the adults in this family. We’ve been sipping on that a lot this year, and the kids were feeling a little left out.

I was racking my brain, trying to come out with a fun, festive holiday drink for them. And I finally came up with white hot chocolate!

Not only does it taste amazing, it’s the ideal “blank canvas” for decorating for the holidays!

White chocolate is such a mild taste, that it goes well with so many things! Here are a few suggestions for adding into your white hot chocolate:

  • candy canes (or other peppermint candy)
  • cinnamon
  • nutmeg
  • caramel
  • coconut (milk or syrup)
  • rum, whiskey, or other liqueur (for adults only)

Toppings for your white hot chocolate are endless! I chose to use homemade red whipped cream and Christmas sprinkles to make it fun and festive for my kids.

Some other suggestions are:

  • crushed candy cane or peppermint candy
  • toasted coconut
  • mini chocolate (or white chocolate) chips

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups white chocolate chips (use good quality ones like Ghirardelli)
  • 4 cups of whole milk

  • a pinch of salt

For homemade colored whipped cream:

  • 1 cup of heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar (or more to taste)

Step 1: To make the homemade colored whipped cream, add the cream to a large bowl. Then, add as much food coloring as needed to reach your desired color.

Step 2: Whip the cream, using a whisk or hand mixer, until it forms soft peaks. Then, add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract.

Step 3: Continue to whip until it forms stiff peaks. Be careful not to over-whip it, or it will break and eventually turn into butter.

Step 4: Next, to make the white hot chocolate, add the milk and white chocolate chips to a medium sized pot. Heat it over medium-low heat, and stir continuously until all of the white chocolate has melted. Do not let it simmer or boil.

Step 5: Turn the heat off, then add a pinch of salt and vanilla (or any other flavorings you want). Pour it in a mug or mason jar, top with whipped cream and sprinkles (or any other toppings of choice), and ENJOY!

Notes

  • It’s important to use good quality white chocolate chips, such as Ghirardelli.

  • You can use the milk of your choice. Some people use 2%, or do a mixture of milk and half and half. Personally, I think using all whole milk gives it the best taste and consistency.

  • For the adults in the family only – we like to add whiskey to our hot white chocolate. It’s heaven!
