What is Cinco De Mayo?

Cinco De Mayo is a Mexican holiday that is celebrated annually on May 5th. Interestingly enough, it has become extremely popular in the United States, even more than in Mexico!

Cinco De Mayo is often mistaken as Mexico’s independence day, but is actually a celebration of Mexico’s victory in the Battle of Puebla, in 1862.

In the United States, anything to do with Mexican culture is often represented during Cinco De Mayo celebrations.

What are Maracas?

Maracas are percussion instruments that are popular in Latin America, South America and the Caribbean. They are traditionally made from dried gourds and filled with dried beans, pebbles or beads.

How do you make DIY Easter Egg Maracas?

Supplies:

Step 1: Fill the plastic egg with dried rice. I used about 1 tablespoon, but you can experiment with the amount and see what makes the best sound.

Step 2: Use masking tape to seal the egg.

Step 3: Tape a plastic spoon on both sides of the egg, then tape the handles of the spoon together (shown in the picture below). If you want to stop here, you can! Otherwise, follow step 4 to decorate it.

Step 4: Cover the entire maraca with colored cohesive tape or colored duct tape. I found that cohesive tape works well, because if you make a mistake, you can easily peel it off and adjust it.
