What is Cinco De Mayo?

Cinco De Mayo is a Mexican holiday that is celebrated annually on May 5th. Interestingly enough, it has become extremely popular in the United States, even more than in Mexico!

Cinco De Mayo is often mistaken as Mexico’s independence day, but is actually a celebration of Mexico’s victory in the Battle of Puebla, in 1862.

In the United States, anything to do with Mexican culture is often represented during Cinco De Mayo celebrations.

What are Mexican paper flowers?

Mexican paper flowers are traditional folk art from Mexico. They are made from tissue paper or crepe paper and are beautiful with vibrant colors. They are used as decoration for all kinds of celebrations, including weddings and parties.

How do you make Mexican Paper Flowers?

Supplies:

Step 1: Layer 4-6 pieces of tissue paper, alternating different colors. You can use any size tissue paper you’d like. For the flower pictured here, I used 4 half-size sheets. The more layers you use, the fuller your flower will be.

Step 2: Fold the tissue paper like an accordion: fold it down about 1/2″ to 1″, then flip it over and do the same. Repeat until the whole thing is folded, as pictured below.

Step 3: Cut the ends of the tissue paper to create a shape for the petals. You can make a pointed edge or rounded edge, or anything else you can think of. Be creative! (Because the tissue paper is thick, this can be a little tough to cut. For safety reasons, a grown up should do this part.)

Step 4: Attach a pipe cleaner to the middle of the folded tissue paper. Fold the pipe cleaner over the paper, then twist it a few times to secure it. See picture below.

Step 5: Now for the fun part! Fan the tissue paper out. Then, carefully peel each layer away from the ends of the pipe cleaner, as shown below, to create the flower’s petals. And that’s it! Use the pipe cleaner to attached the flowers to whatever you’d like to decorate.
