Hawaiian Style Poke Edamame

Edamame is a common appetizer or snack in Hawai’i…you’ll find it at restaurants, bars, potlucks, or just at home. Most places outside of Hawai’i serve edamame plain or salted. But in the 808 state, it comes in a variety of flavors: spicy, garlic, teriyaki, etc.

Hawai’i is a melting pot of so many different cultures, and it is definitely reflected in all of its ‘ono (delicious) food. This “poke” edamame is no exception. It’s packed with the same delicious flavors of shoyu poke, and I promise you won’t be able to stop eating it!

What is Aloha Shoyu?

This recipe calls for Aloha Shoyu. So what exactly is it?

Aloha Shoyu is hands down, the most popular shoyu (soy sauce) used in Hawai’i. It is less salty and more mild in flavor than other brands, and is the signature flavor behind many of the local dishes.

If you live on the west coast of the United States, you can probably find Aloha Shoyu at your local supermarket. Otherwise, you can buy it directly from Aloha Shoyu’s website, or here on Amazon.

If you must substitute it in this (or any) recipe, you can try using Kikkoman soy sauce and watering it down slightly.
