I’m so happy that traditional styrofoam packing peanuts are mostly a thing of the past! They were so bad for our environment, ending up in landfills for centuries to come and polluting our oceans. Luckily, most packing peanuts are now made of cornstarch (or other natural starches) and are completely biodegradable!
If you happen to receive a box full of these, why not have fun with them? Packing peanut art is so fun to make…your kids will have a blast creating all kinds of designs. Plus, it’s the perfect way to upcycle them!
How to Dispose of Biodegradable Packing Peanuts
Although biodegradable packing peanuts will eventually completely degrade, they do need some help!
You can dissolve them at home in some water, then wash them down the sink, or even add them to a compost pile. They are 100% natural and plant based, so they will not destroy your pipes or pollute the environment.
This melting snowman science experiment is a fun way to get your kids involved with dissolving them!

How do you make packing peanut art?
Supplies:
Step 1: Cut the packing peanuts into whatever size/shape is needed for your design.
Step 2: Dip your finger in water and rub it on the portion of the packing peanut that you want to stick onto the cardstock. Use the water sparingly, as too much will make them turn to mush. Create any picture you’d like!
Step 3: Complete your design by coloring the packing peanuts with the markers.
