Christmas Tree pull apart bread

My family and I have decided to make a pasta dinner for Christmas this year. And pasta always needs good bread to go along with it!

So, I was in search for a delicious holiday bread, and I found it at It’s Always Autumn. Their Christmas Tree Spinach Dip Breadsticks recipe was easy to make, delicious, and so festive! My fiance and kids devoured it. I knew instantly that I would make it again for our Christmas dinner.

I tweaked the recipe slightly, so I thought I would share it with you here. Whether you use the original recipe from It’s Always Autumn, or this one, I know you’re going to LOVE it!

How do you make this pull-apart Christmas tree bread?

Christmas Tree pull apart bread

Ingredients:

  • Pillsbury pizza crust (or any other refrigerated, ready to bake pizza dough)
  • 10 oz frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon of dried oregano
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese, grated or shredded
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 400º F.

Step 2: Add the spinach, cream cheese, minced garlic, salt, basil and oregano to a bowl and mix until completely combined. Then mix in the parmesan and mozzarella cheeses. Set it aside.

Step 3: Unroll the pizza dough onto a sheet pan lined with parchment paper. Then, cut the dough into a triangle, as pictured below. I used kitchen shears to cut it, but you can also use a pizza cutter or a knife.

Step 4: Remove the two outer pieces of dough and place them side by side to create another triangle. (This will be the top part of the bread). Pinch the seams together well. Don’t worry if the dough gets a little stretched out.

Step 5: Cut the bottom of the triangle on the baking sheet to form a tree trunk. Then, spread the spinach and cheese mixture evenly over the tree.

Step 6: Place the second triangle on top, stretching it as needed to completely cover the tree. Then, cut the bottom of the triangle to match the trunk of the tree below it.

Step 7: Using kitchen shears or a pizza cutter, cut slits along the sides of the tree. Be sure to cut almost to the middle, leaving a small piece uncut to hold the tree together. Then, twist each piece 2-3 times, as pictured below.

Step 7: Cut shapes out of the excess dough, and place them on the tree like ornaments (optional).

Step 8: Bake on the bottom rack of the oven for 20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. Make sure the bottom is cooked through, and golden brown as well. Mix the melted butter and garlic powder together, then brush it over the top of the bread. Serve warm with your favorite marinara sauce. My favorite, hands down, is Rao’s marinara. Enjoy!

  1. Can I use fresh spinach?

    • Yes, you can! It may change the consistency, though. You could also saute or steam the fresh spinach before adding it to the mix. Let me know how it turns out. 🙂

      • How do you store this if making the day before? I assume since it has cream cheese it will need to go in the fridge? Looks so good!

        • I’ve never kept it more than one day because it gets eaten too quickly! But I would let it cool completely, the wrap it well in plastic wrap. Cover it in foil and reheat it in the oven.

  6. If I used premade spinach/artichoke dip, how much would I measure/spread onto the dough?

  7. Could you make this the day before and bake the day you’re serving?
