Frozen Snowflake Ornaments

This post was updated on January 5, 2026, to share new book recommendations, highlight the friendship inspiration behind the craft, and make the Frozen Snowflake Ornaments even more fun and easy for kids to create!

This craft was inspired by one of our favorite books, “Friends Are Friends Forever.” Reading it together reminded us how special friendships are — and it gave me the idea for a little winter project the kids could do together. Watching them carefully create snowflakes, share ideas, and proudly hang their icy creations outside made me think: just like friends, every snowflake is unique and beautiful.

This Frozen Snowflake Ornament craft is simple, fun, and magical — and it doubles as a mini science lesson about freezing and ice formation!

How to Make Frozen Snowflake Ornaments

Supplies You’ll Need

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Make Your Paper Snowflakes

Fold small squares of paper and cut along the folded edges to create symmetrical snowflakes. Encourage kids to share ideas and help each other — just like the friends in Friends Are Friends Forever!

2. Attach String

Tie a piece of string through one of the snowflake’s holes so you can hang it later.

Adding string to a paper snowflake.

3. Freeze

Place the paper snowflakes into bowls or pans filled with water. Make sure the string hangs outside so you can pull them out once frozen. Put the containers outside if it’s below freezing, or set them in your freezer overnight.

4. Unmold

Once frozen solid, gently pull on the strings to release your ice snowflakes from the containers.

5. Display!

Hang your frozen snowflake ornaments on tree branches, porch railings, or windows — and watch them sparkle in winter light.
