Sweet Potato Pie Baby Food

I wanted to create a delicious fall baby food recipe, so I thought mimicking sweet potato pie was a good idea.

This puree includes sweet potato (of course), an extra ripe banana for sweetness, coconut milk for creaminess, and pumpkin spice.

This naturally sweet and healthy baby food is sure to be a favorite of your little one!

What health benefits does Sweet Potato Pie Baby Food provide?

Sweet Potato is high in antioxidants and fiber, which is great for digestion.

Banana is a good source of vitamin C, manganese and potassium which means it is good for immunity, skin, heart health and blood pressure.

Coconut Milk contains antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties and although it is high in fat, it is known to help with heart health.

Are all coconut milks the same?

No, not all coconut milk is created equal! Depending on the brand, the ratio of coconut milk to water will vary, which affects the flavor, consistency and nutritional value. Some brands only contain coconut milk and water, while others have sweeteners and preservatives added. It is really disappointing to open a can (or carton) of coconut milk and have it taste watery and artificial. It can completely ruin the flavor of your dish.

I recommend using Aroy-D brand (from Thailand), which can be found at any Asian store. You can also buy it online here. It is contains 60% coconut milk and water, and that’s it. It is delicious and creamy, and tastes very natural.

How long will homemade baby food last?

Fresh, homemade baby food will last in the refrigerator for 3 days. Once the 3 days have passed, the remaining food should be disposed of for safety reasons.

If you make this or any other baby food recipes in bulk, it can be stored it the freezer for up to 3 months. Click here for more information, tips and tricks on storing homemade baby food.

By the way, these baby food freezer storage trays are PERFECT for freezing baby food. They come with snug fit lids that prevent spills and freezer burns, and they stack so easily.

Can I make my own Pumpkin Spice?

Yes, you can absolutely make your own pumpkin spice. I actually find that it’s cheaper to make it yourself!

Pumpkin spice varies from brand to brand, recipe to recipe. The recipe I like to use is from All Recipes, by PENILU:

What are extra-ripe (overripe) bananas?

An extra-ripe, or overripe banana has lots of dark brown spots on it, and is a little softer in texture. The picture below shows the banana at the perfect stage.

overripe banana

The starch in an overripe banana has mostly converted to sugar, so it is a lot sweeter and easier to digest. It also has a higher level of antioxidants than a less ripe banana.

How do make Sweet Potato Pie Baby Food?

Sweet Potato Pie Baby Food

I was gifted a Baby Brezza Food Maker Deluxe and decided to use it to make this recipe. I was honestly impressed with this all-in-one machine. It steamed and pureed the food so well.

The two best things about it? There is no need to keep an eye on the food, as everything is automatic and timed, and the cleanup is SO easy!

If you don’t have a Baby Brezza Food Maker, no worries! You can still easily make this recipe.
