Fall Leaves Wreath Kids Craft

Fall is definitely one of my favorite seasons…the weather is nice and cool (perfect time for my kids’ favorite pumpkin soup), the holidays are right around the corner, and the leaves are turning beautiful shades of yellow, orange and red.

My kids and I love doing nature-inspired arts and crafts. Foraging for art supplies from nature is fun and adventurous, and very budget-friendly! We had a blast making this fall leaves wreath, and I’m sure you and your kids will too!

Why Do Leaves Change Color In The Fall?

I always try to find teaching moments in the activities we do. While collecting leaves, I explained to my kids why leaves change color and they were excited to learn about it.

Leaves make food for trees during the spring and summer months, but stop during the fall and winter because there is less day light and the temperature gets colder. Chlorophyll, the chemical in leaves that helps to produce food, gives the leaves their green color. When the leaves’ food production shuts down during the fall, the chlorophyll breaks down and the green color disappears, revealing the leaves’ true colors.

How do you make this fall leaves wreath?

You’ll Need:

fall leaves (and sticks, pine cones, or any other cool things you find in nature)
cardboard
scissors
glue

Step 1: Take your kids outside and gather leaves, pine cones, or any other cool items they’d like to put on their wreath.

Step 2: Use a large bowl to trace a circle onto a piece of cardboard (old boxes are perfect for this). Then, use a smaller bowl to trace a circle inside the large circle (like a donut). Cut the circles out to form the base of the wreath (a job for the adults).

Step 3: Cut the stems off the leaves. This is a good job for your kids to do.
