healthy French toast for toddlers

All kids love French toast, right? Well, mine definitely do!

What I don’t love about it is the all the mess the syrup can make! Sticky hands, sticky faces, sticky table….

With these French toast sticks, I don’t have to worry about the mess because the syrup is in the batter! That means there’s no need for extra syrup. This eliminates the mess and lets you control the amount of syrup your kids have. Two points for team Mom!

What is Texas Toast?

Texas Toast is double-thick slices of white bread. I use it in this recipe because I like the extra thickness it gives to the French toast sticks.

You can also use any other loaf bread (wheat, challah, brioche, etc.) and cut thick slices yourself.

How to Freeze French Toast Sticks

These French toast sticks are perfect to make ahead and freeze for later. Once they’re cooked and cooled, lay them flat on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper and place them in the freezer. Once they’re frozen solid, place them in a freezer bag and store them up to 3 months.

If you don’t already have them, these silicone freezer bags are a great eco-friendly alternative for freezer bags.

How Do You Make Mess-Free Vegan French Toast Sticks?

Ingredients:

  • 6 slices of Texas toast
  • 1 banana
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup of dairy free milk
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • coconut oil or vegan butter for cooking

Step 1: Add the banana, cinnamon, non-dairy milk and maple syrup to a food processor or blender and blend until smooth. Pour the mixture into a bowl and set aside.

Step 2: Cut the bread into “sticks.” I usually cut the crust off, but this is not necessary.

Step 3: Heat oil or vegan butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Quickly dip a bread stick into the batter and shake off the excess. Then, place it in the skillet and repeat. Cook the French toast sticks on all sides until they are golden brown. Serve immediately. Enjoy!

Notes: Stale bread is the best option for making French toast, because it prevents the inside of the bread from being soggy. If you don’t have stale bread, simply cook the French toast a little longer to “dry it out.”

I usually cut the bread into “sticks” before cooking because I like to get all of the sides toasted and caramelized. If you want to save time and effort, you can cook the slices of bread whole, then cut them into “sticks” after.
