These easy vegan French toast sticks are crisp on the outside, soft in the middle, and naturally sweetened with banana and maple syrup. Because the maple syrup is blended right into the batter, there’s no need to pour extra syrup on top—making them a great low-mess breakfast for kids.

They’re also freezer-friendly, easy to reheat, and perfect for busy mornings.

What is Texas Toast?

Texas Toast is double-thick slices of white bread. I use it in this recipe because I like the extra thickness it gives to the French toast sticks.

You can also use any other loaf bread (wheat, challah, brioche, etc.) and cut thick slices yourself.

Why You’ll Love These Vegan French Toast Sticks

French toast is always a hit in our house, but the sticky syrup-covered hands, faces, and table are another story.

That’s why I love making these French toast sticks with maple syrup already mixed into the batter. They still have that sweet French toast flavor, but you can serve them without an extra drizzle of syrup.

They’re also:

  • Egg-free and dairy-free
  • Easy for kids to pick up and eat
  • Freezer-friendly
  • Made with simple ingredients
  • Great for breakfast or a quick snack

What Is Texas Toast?

Texas toast is simply bread that is sliced much thicker than standard sandwich bread.

I like using it for French toast sticks because the thicker slices hold up well when dipped into the batter and give you a soft center with nicely browned edges.

If you don’t have Texas toast, you can use another thick-cut bread such as white bread, wheat bread, challah, or brioche. Just keep in mind that challah and brioche may not be vegan, so check the ingredients if that matters to you.

Ingredients

You only need a few simple ingredients:

  • Texas toast: Thick bread works best for sturdy French toast sticks.
  • Banana: Helps create an egg-free batter while adding sweetness.
  • Cinnamon: Adds classic French toast flavor.
  • Non-dairy milk: Use your favorite unsweetened plant milk.
  • Maple syrup: Sweetens the batter so you don’t need extra syrup for serving.
  • Coconut oil or vegan butter: For cooking the French toast until golden brown.

How to Make Vegan French Toast Sticks

Ingredients:

  • 6 slices Texas toast
  • 1 banana
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup dairy free milk
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • coconut oil or vegan butter for cooking

Step 1: Make the French toast batter

Add the banana, cinnamon, non-dairy milk, and maple syrup to a blender or food processor. Blend until completely smooth, then pour the mixture into a wide, shallow bowl.

Step 2: Cut the bread into sticks

Cut each slice of Texas toast into thick sticks. You can remove the crusts if you prefer, but it isn’t necessary.

Step 3: Heat the skillet

Heat a small amount of coconut oil or vegan butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat.

Step 4: Dip the bread

Quickly dip each bread stick into the batter, coating all sides. Let any excess batter drip off before placing it in the skillet.

Step 5: Cook the French toast sticks

Cook the French toast sticks for about 2–3 minutes per side, turning as needed, until they are golden brown on all sides and heated through.

Step 6: Serve

Serve the French toast sticks warm. The maple syrup is already mixed into the batter, so there’s no need to add extra syrup unless you want to.

Tips for the Best French Toast Sticks

Slightly stale bread works especially well for French toast because it absorbs the batter without becoming quite as soft or soggy.

If your bread is very fresh, you can leave the slices out for a little while before making the recipe or simply cook the French toast sticks a little longer over medium-low heat.

Be careful not to soak the bread in the batter for too long. A quick dip is all you need.

I also like cutting the bread into sticks before cooking so more of the surface gets golden and caramelized. If you’re short on time, you can cook the bread as whole slices and cut them into sticks afterward.

How to Freeze French Toast Sticks

These are great for meal prep.

Allow the cooked French toast sticks to cool completely, then arrange them in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Freeze until firm, then transfer them to a freezer-safe container or reusable freezer bag.

They can be frozen for up to 3 months.

If you don’t already have them, these silicone freezer bags are a great eco-friendly alternative for freezer bags.

How to Reheat Frozen French Toast Sticks

You can reheat them straight from the freezer.

For the best texture, warm them in a toaster oven, air fryer, or oven until heated through and lightly crisp again.

You can also microwave them for a faster option, although they will be softer.

What to Serve With French Toast Sticks

Since the maple syrup is already in the batter, these don’t need much.

Try serving them with:

  • Fresh berries
  • Sliced bananas
  • Apples or pears
  • Dairy-free yogurt
  • Nut or seed butter
  • A sprinkle of cinnamon
