Kids LOVE to play with kinetic sand, but it can be pretty pricey. Here’s a cheap, easy to make and edible version that you can make with your kids!
I recently found this recipe for edible kinetic sand in Awesome Edible Kids Crafts by Arena Blake. It was such a hit with my kids, that I thought it I would share it with you!
What I love about this is that it uses only 3 inexpensive and common household ingredients. So what are you waiting for? Lets make edible kinetic sand!
What is Kinetic Sand?
Kinetic sand is regular sand that is coated in silicone oil. It’s great to play with because it’s soft, wet and moldable and it never dries out! It’s really fun to squeeze and run through your hands, and makes the perfect addition to sensory bins for kids.
This edible version mimics the store-bought stuff, but it is budget friendly and edible (so if you have little ones, you don’t have to worry if they decide to do a taste test)!
Can you make different colors?
Yes! But because this recipe uses oil, you need to use an oil based food coloring to color it. Make sure to read the label, because most food coloring is water based, and as we all know, oil and water don’t mix!
To color this kinetic sand, mix the oil based food coloring into the oil before adding it to the flour. Also, substitute extra flour for the chocolate powder.
Dinosaur Dig
There are so many fun ways to play with kinetic sand. My kids absolutely love dinosaurs, so I thought it would be fun to add the sand to a bin with dinosaur skeletons. They dug for dinosaurs with their hands, and used paint brushes to brush the sand off…just like paleontologists!
