Açaí bowls have been popular in Hawaii for as long as I can remember. I would often get a bowl after a hike, or a day at the beach. They seem to taste extra good on those super hot days.

My family and I don’t live in Hawaii anymore, but we never forget to eat açaí bowls during our visits home. Here’s a few pictures of my son enjoying them.

What is açaí?

Açaí are small berries that are found on the palm trees in the South American rain forests.

They are known as one of the top superfoods and are loaded with antioxidants, fiber, heart-healthy fats and calcium. For more information on açaí berries, check out this article.

How do you pronounce açaí?

People pronounce the word “açaí” differently, depending on where in the world you are. But how do you really pronounce it?

Açaí is a Brazilian Portuguese word that is pronounce ah-sa-ee.

Where can you buy açaí berries?

It’s rare to find fresh açaí berries, but you can find them in frozen, dried, or powdered form.

The frozen smoothie packs are what is used to make açaí bowls, and they can be found in the frozen food section of your grocery store, near the frozen fruit.

If you can’t find it in your local grocery store, you can purchase it here, through Amazon fresh.

What is a smoothie bowl?

A smoothie bowl is a really thick smoothie, served in a bowl and loaded with toppings such as fresh fruit, berries, granola, etc.

Are smoothie bowls healthy?

Yes! (And no.) Smoothie bowls, in theory, are super healthy. Fruit blended with with some milk and topped with healthy toppings. How could that not be healthy?

Well, you can make smoothies bowls as healthy (or unhealthy) as you want. They are completely customizable, so how healthy they are would depend on how much sweetener you add to your smoothie, or how healthy your toppings are.

How do you thicken a smoothie bowl?

A really thick smoothie is key to a good smoothie bowl. The three “musts” for making a thick smoothie are:

Smoothie bowls are:

  • 100% customizable, so you can please everyone in the family
  • great for breakfast or as a healthy snack
  • are great for restrictive diets (vegan, gluten free, nut free)
  • easy to make
  • so refreshing, especially on a hot day

How do you make an açaí smoothie bowl?

Ingredients:

  • 1 açaí pack, unsweetened
  • 2 frozen bananas (about 1.5 cups)
  • 1 cup of frozen blueberries
  • 1/4 cup soy milk, plus more as needed (you can substitute other non-dairy milk or apple juice)

Equipment:

Blender (preferably high-powered)

Step 1: Place all of the ingredients in a blender, and blend on high until smooth. Stop the blender and stir as needed. If extra liquid is needed for blending, add in 1 tablespoon at a time. You want to have a really thick smoothie, so try to add as little liquid as possible.
