Berry, Banana & Avocado Smoothie

Everybody loves smoothies!

Everyone loves smoothies, right?  At least this is true in my household.  So why not make it healthy?

What I love about this smoothie is that it contains healthy ingredients, but it doesn’t affect the taste.  It is still creamy and delicious!

Neither of my kids are fans of avocados, but they both LOVE this smoothie.

Easton, my 3-year-old son, asks for this smoothie all the time.  He knows there’s avocado in it, and that’s fine with him because the berries hide the avocado taste.  Talk about a win!

What are the health benefits of this Berry, Banana & Avocado Smoothie?

Avocado and Hemp Hearts  are loaded with Omega-3 fatty acids.  Among many things, Omega-3 fatty acids can prevent heart disease, can reduce symptoms of ADHD in children, and is especially important for the brains of infants and pregnant women.  For an extensive list of benefits, click here.

Berries are high in fiber and loaded with antioxidants.

Bananas are a good source of vitamin C, manganese and potassium which means they are good for your immunity, your skin, your heart health and your blood pressure.

Oats are rich in antioxidants, can lower your cholesterol levels, and can keep you full for a long time.

Almond milk is naturally high in vitamin E, which fights against stress and inflammation, and is also enriched with calcium and vitamin D, which is important for bone health.

This healthy smoothie is:

  • Baby and kid friendly

  • Delicious!

This smoothie is great for teething babies:

While it doesn’t happen to all babies, many babies (like mine) become fussy eaters while teething.  This happened with my son, and is currently happening with my daughter.

This smoothie is great for her because she can get all of these great nutrients without having to chew.  The cold smoothie also helps to soothe her gums.

If your baby can’t drink out of a straw yet, you can always spoon feed it to her.

Making popsicles out of this smoothie is another great idea for teething babies. The frozen pops will soothe their sore gums.

The Teetherpop is perfect for this!.  It has an easy grip handle and is designed to catch excess liquid a it melts, reducing the mess. Yay!

How do you make the Berry, Banana & Avocado Smoothie?

Berry, Banana & Avocado Smoothie Ingredients

Making this smoothie is so quick and easy.  The key, though, is to use overripe, frozen bananas.  These of course need to be prepped ahead of time.  Here are my tips for freezing bananas.

Overripe bananas are naturally very sweet, which is why I don’t add any sweetener to this smoothie.  Using frozen bananas help to make this smoothie cold and thick.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of frozen mixed berries
  • 1/2 cup of frozen ripe bananas
  • 1/2 an avocado (or 1 small avocado)
  • 1 tablespoon of hemp hearts
  • 1 tablespoon of oats
  • 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk (or other non-dairy milk)

*My family loves this smoothie without any sweetener, but if you’d like to add some, you can use some agave or honey (not for kids under 1-year-old).

Equipment:

Method:

Step 1: Add the oats and hemp hearts to a blender and blend until it forms a powder (about 30 seconds – 1 minute).

Blended oats and hemp hearts.

Step 2: Add the remaining ingredients and blend until smooth.  This recipe makes a thick smoothie, so you may have to stop and stir the mixture a few times.  If you don’t want your smoothie to be too thick, simply add more almond milk.

Step 3: Pour into your favorite cup and serve immediately.  Enjoy!
