Cranberry, Apple + Banana Baby Food

As you probably already know, cranberries are very tart and bitter. That’s why, for this baby food puree, I’ve paired the cranberries with apple and banana. These fruits are naturally very sweet, which balance the tartness of the cranberries perfectly.

Cranberry, Apple + Banana Baby Food is great to serve during the holidays, when fresh cranberries are abundant. This puree can also be made year-round with frozen cranberries.

What benefits does this Cranberry, Apple + Banana Baby Food Puree Have?

Cranberries are high in vitamins C and E, which boost immunity and are important for skin, muscle, bone and eye health.

Apples are high in fiber, vitamin C, which supports immune systems, and is high in antioxidants.

Bananas are high in vitamin B6, vitamin C, potassium and manganese.

How long will homemade baby food last?

Fresh, homemade baby food will last in the refrigerator for 3 days. Once the 3 days have passed, the remaining food should be disposed of for safety reasons.

If you make this or any other baby food recipes in bulk, it can be stored it the freezer for up to 3 months. Click here for more information, tips and tricks on storing homemade baby food.

By the way, these baby food freezer storage trays are PERFECT for freezing baby food. They come with snug fit lids that prevent spills and freezer burns, and they stack so easily.

What are extra-ripe (overripe) bananas?

This recipe uses an extra-ripe banana to balance the tartness of the cranberries.

An extra-ripe, or overripe banana, has lots of dark brown spots on it and is a little softer in texture. The picture below shows the banana at the perfect stage.

The starch in an overripe banana has mostly converted to sugar, so it is a lot sweeter and easier to digest. It also has a higher level of antioxidants than a less ripe banana.

How do you make Cranberry, Apple + Banana Baby Food?

Cranberry, Apple + Banana Baby Food

I was gifted a Baby Brezza Food Maker Deluxe and decided to use it to make this recipe. I was honestly impressed with this all-in-one machine. It steamed and pureed the food so well.

The two best things about it? There is no need to keep an eye on the food, as everything is automatic and timed, and the cleanup is SO easy!

If you don’t have a Baby Brezza Food Maker, no worries! You can still easily make this recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup of fresh cranberries (or frozen)
  • 1 medium Fuji apple, peeled, cored and diced (or another sweet apple)
  • 1 extra-ripe banana

Step 1: Add the cranberries and apple to the Baby Brezza and steam for 15 minutes.

Step 2: Add the banana, and puree until smooth. Add water, baby formula or breast milk to think out the puree if necessary.

If you don’t have a Baby Brezza, no problem! Simply add the cranberries and apple to a small pot, along with a 1/2 cup of water, and simmer until the apples are soft (about 15 minutes). Put the cooked fruit a food processor or blender, reserving any extra liquid. Add the banana and blend until smooth. Add the reserved liquid, if needed, along with water, baby formula or breast milk to achieve your desired consistency.

Note: The Baby Brezza is extremely convenient and a huge time saver. It does a good job of pureeing, but doesn’t always give you a perfectly smooth puree.

This is not a bad thing! I am in favor of giving your baby different textures, because it will help with palate training your baby and avoiding picky eating in the future.

That being said, if you do want perfectly smooth purees, you’ll need a high powered blender.
