In Hawai’i, fried rice is a staple. Although it’s eaten at any time of the day, it’s probably most popular served with breakfast!

Hawaiian style fried rice is usually loaded with meat (Portugese sausage, spam, Vienna sausage, or lap cheong), eggs and green onions. It’s slightly sweet and because we use medium grain rice, it’s not as “dry” as Chinese style friend rice.

I became a vegetarian many years ago, so I had to learn how to make my own versions of my favorite local foods. This vegan fried rice is ‘ono (delicious) and my fiance (also from Hawai’i) and kids love it!

What kind of rice is used in Hawaiian (local) style fried rice?

White calrose (medium grain) rice is what is used in Hawai’i most often, and is also what’s used to make this local style fried rice. The most popular brand is Hinode. If you can’t find it where you live, you can get it here. You can also substitute another brand of white calrose rice.

What is Aloha Shoyu?

This recipe calls for Aloha Shoyu. So what exactly is it?

Aloha Shoyu is hands down, the most popular shoyu (soy sauce) used in Hawai’i. It is less salty and more mild in flavor than other brands, and is the signature flavor behind many of the local dishes.

If you live on the west coast of the United States, you can probably find Aloha Shoyu at your local supermarket. Otherwise, you can buy it directly from Aloha Shoyu’s website, or here on Amazon.

If you must substitute it in this (or any) recipe, you can try using Kikkoman soy sauce and watering it down slightly.
