Can I add herbs and spices to baby’s first foods?

Seasoning baby food with herbs and spices from the beginning is so important! It introduces your baby’s palate to a variety of flavors and promotes adventurous eating in the future.

With both my son and daughter, I added herbs and spices to their food from their first bite and I had no problems.

The reason foods are first introduced to babies one at a time is to be able to easily identify if your baby has food allergies and what specifically he is reacting to. Allergic reactions to herbs and spices are rare, so it’s generally safe to add them to baby’s first foods.

If you are not comfortable with this, you can introduce the main ingredient first, in this case apples. Once you know there is no reaction to that (wait a few days to see if you notice any symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea or rash) you can begin to pair the apples with an herb or spice.

What health benefits does this apple + nutmeg baby food puree provide?

This puree is loaded with health benefits for your baby!

Apples are high in fiber, vitamin C, which supports immune systems, and is high in antioxidants.

Nutmeg is also high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.

How do you make apple + nutmeg baby food puree?

I was gifted a Baby Brezza Food Maker Deluxe and decided to use it to make this recipe. I was honestly impressed with this all-in-one machine. It steamed and pureed the food so well.

The two best things about it? There is no need to keep an eye on the food, as everything is automatic and timed, and the cleanup is SO easy!

If you don’t have a Baby Brezza Food Maker, no worries! You can still easily make this recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 2 apples
  • 1 pinch of nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup of water, formula or breast milk (plus more if needed)

Step 1: Wash, peel and core the apples. Then, cut them into small cubes.

Step 2: Add the apples and nutmeg to the Baby Brezza Food Maker, and set it to steam for 15 minutes and puree. And, seriously, that’s it! It will cook and puree it automatically, so when you take the lid off, you’ll have what is pictured below.

If you don’t have a Baby Brezza Food Maker, simply steam the apples for 8-10 minutes, or until they’re soft. Add the apples to a blender or food processor, along with the nutmeg, and puree until smooth. Add water, baby formula or breast milk as needed to achieve your desired consistency.

Note: The Baby Brezza is extremely convenient and a huge time saver. It does a good job of pureeing, but doesn’t always give you a perfectly smooth puree.

This is not a bad thing! I am in favor of giving your baby different textures, because it will help with palate training your baby and avoiding picky eating in the future.

That being said, if you do want perfectly smooth purees, you’ll need a high powered blender.

Change it up!

Try substituting the nutmeg with cinnamon, ginger, or cloves!
