This post is for an easy, delicious and refreshing mango smoothie bowl.
I love smoothies…and one of my favorite ways to enjoy them is in a smoothie bowl. They are so delicious, so refreshing, and so satisfying.
What is a smoothie bowl?
A smoothie bowl is a really thick smoothie, served in a bowl and loaded with toppings such as fresh fruit, berries, granola, etc.
Are smoothie bowls healthy?
Yes! (And no.) Smoothie bowls, in theory, are super healthy. Fruit blended with with some milk and topped with healthy toppings. How could that not be healthy?
Well, you can make smoothies bowls as healthy (or unhealthy) as you want. They are completely customizable, so how healthy they are would depend on how much sweetener you add to your smoothie, or how healthy your toppings are.
How do you thicken a smoothie bowl?
A really thick smoothie is key to a good smoothie bowl. The three “musts” for making a thick smoothie are:
- A powerful blender
- Using only frozen fruit, including frozen banana
- Using the least amount of liquid possible
Smoothie bowls are:
- 100% customizable, so you can please everyone in the family
- great for breakfast or as a healthy snack
- are great for restrictive diets (vegan, gluten free, nut free)
- easy to make
- so refreshing, especially on a hot day
How do you make a mango smoothie bowl?
Ingredients:
- 3 cups frozen mango
- 1 frozen banana (about 3/4 cup)
- 1/4 cup non-dairy milk of choice + more as needed (I like to use canned coconut milk)
- sweetener of choice (optional)
Equipment:
Blender (preferably high-powered)
Step 1: Place all of the ingredients in a blender, and blend on high until smooth. Stop the blender and stir as needed. If extra liquid is needed for blending, add in 1 tablespoon at a time. You want to have a really thick smoothie, so try to add as little liquid as possible.
Step 2: Spoon the smoothie into a bowl, then top with your favorite toppings. Serve immediately. ENJOY!
What toppings can I add to my mango smoothie bowl?
You can add anything you want! Some of my favorites are:
- granola
- fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, etc.)
- fresh fruit (mango, kiwi, banana, etc.)
- nuts and seeds (sliced almonds, sunflower seeds, hemp hearts, pumpkin seeds)
- a drizzle of honey
- Greek yogurt
- toasted coconut
How do you cut mango quickly?
A mango can be tricky to cut if you don’t know how. Here’s the quickest, easiest way to cut a mango:
Step 1: A mango’s seed is large, flat and oval. Cut the flesh off on both sides of the seed. Then, cut the flesh off from around the seed.
Step 2: Score the large pieces of mango, but be careful not to cut through its skin.
Step 3: Invert the mango so the scored pieces pop out. Then, take a knife and slice off the pieces.
How do you freeze fresh mangoes?
Freezing good, ripe mangoes is so much better than buying frozen mangoes (they’re usually not as sweet or flavorful).
Freezing fresh mangoes is super easy! Just cut the mangoes (as explained above), place them in a single layer on baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and freeze them for at least 3 hours or until they are frozen solid.
Then, transfer them to an airtight container, or freezer bag.
I like these reusable silicone freezer bags as an eco-friendly option.
If stored properly, frozen mango can last up to a year!
